Abstract

Purpose: This study identified the factors influencing the self-care performance among gout patients to provide the basis of the development of a nursing intervention program that can improve the self-care performance.

Methods: A survey was conducted of 132 gout patients who visited the departments of rheumatology and orthopedics from September to November 2013. The data were collected using the instruments for knowledge of gout, self-care performance, and self-efficacy.

Results: The gout patients¡¯ knowledge, self-efficacy, exercise pattern, and drink pattern accounted for 71.2% of the self-care performance. Among them, the most important factor affecting on self-care behaviors was knowledge levels, showing the variance of 51.0%.

Conclusion: The strategy for improving the knowledge and self -efficacy level should be considered in the development of educational programs for gout patients.
